Mr. Holman's Weekly Parent Update 12/06/21

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Social Media Challenges - Last Thursday morning we were alerted to a couple of Instagram sites that showcased pictures of students' feet as taken under toilet stall partitions at Moscow Middle School.  There were fortunately no photos of anything other than lower legs and feet, but there were and are students who quickly became concerned about the invasion of privacy, or worse, that such a thing represents.  By the end of the Thursday, the source of the sites had been identified and addressed, and the two sites (boy version, girl version) were emptied of postings.  In addition, we have directly requested of Instagram that they remove those sites completely.  I will continue to repeat that we have great kids here at MMS, and that even great kids are strongly influenced by social media and peer inputs.  Kids sometimes take actions that they think will be harmless and funny without considering the rights of other individuals or possible consequences to themselves.  This is not a new phenomenon at the middle school developmental stage, by the way.  We all know this to be true, having gone through these (frontal lobe not fully developed) stages ourselves.  The challenges kids face now are increasingly greater, however.  They truly have the ability to commit serious crimes with the push of a button, perhaps affecting the rest of their lives.  They need our collective guidance more than ever. We will continue to pursue educational approaches, both proactively and responsively. Consequences for abuse of technology include a minimum loss of use of technology at school up to suspension and/or charges being filed, if necessary.  We take both the personal privacy and the necessity to learn for all of our students very seriously.  We are also confident that no parents wish a device that they signed a contract for and issued to a child be used in a negative or illegal way.  I very much appreciate the support that we receive from parents as we have addressed the issues that have occurred.  We will continue to be vigilant and to quickly act on any such situation that comes to our attention.

Gifts of music - The MMS and MHS Orchestras will be presenting their Holiday Concert this Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7 pm in the MHS auditorium.  The MMS Choir will be once again participating in the University of Idaho Holiday Concert on Friday, December 10.  These are both terrific events and a great way to support our kids.  Thank you, Mr. Garrett and Mrs. McIntosh, for your work with them.

Second Winter Sports Season and an important notice - We learned very recently that Washington State is not allowing out of state student groups to come across the border to compete without either proof of Covid vaccination or recent negative Covid test for all participants, effective immediately.  As a result, we will not be traveling into Washington until further notice.  Our Bi-State league schools include Pullman and Clarkston who have been very gracious and helpful as we have worked to adjust competition schedules for this and upcoming seasons.  Idaho schools will be hosting more home events than usual during this time, difficult with the limited gym space that we have.  That said, our girls basketball (open to 6-8 grade girls) and wrestling (open to 6-8 grade boys and girls) begin right after winter break.  If you haven't yet signed your child up on Register My Athlete, please do so as soon as possible.  (On the RMA site, look for Moscow High School and then either Middle School Girls Basketball or Middle School Wrestling.  All forms must be submitted, including a current sports physical, before a child can be allowed to practice/participate.)  We will be holding lunchtime/ informational meetings for our students later this week, and will let them know via school bulletin.
