Mr. Holman's Weekly Parent Update 08/24/20

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Thank you for working with us as we fine tune the A and B groupings for our hybrid model and finalize our on-line only list.  We missed a few things in our initial list, and we appreciate the contacts.  Those changes will be incorporated into the system Monday.  Please let us know if you have additional questions.

In three weeks, on Monday, September 14, we will officially begin the current school year with students.  Certified staff members officially return to school this Wednesday, although they have been working hard already this summer to get ready for our current model.  As I mentioned last week, the MMS staff will be fine tuning the various aspects of our new structure and preparing to help our students, both hybrid and online only, quickly get up to speed as the school year starts.

Canvas - MSD teachers will be training this week to become more familiar with Canvas, our learning management system.  Later this week, you will receive some more information about Canvas and links to introductory videos for parents and students.  Canvas is well established and has a reputation of being quite user friendly, in addition to having great online support and highly rated smartphone apps.

MMS Tours for New Students - We are planning opportunities for students new to MMS, including all of our sixth graders, to come in to tour the school in small groups.  The tours will begin the week of August 31.  Students and tour guides will wear masks and will practice distancing while they are introduced to the school and routine.  We will be sending out specific communication later this week as we begin to schedule those optional visits.

Fall Sports - Fall sports will be held with a team- and skill-building, intramural focus.  The first day of practice for all sports is Monday, Sept. 14.  Sports will include football for 7th and 8th graders, volleyball for 7th and 8th grade girls, cross country for 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and cheer for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. We will not be holding interscholastic competitions this year.  Sports physicals are still required every two years, so please make arrangements for a physical if your child is or will be due.  MSD is determining changes in sports fees at this time, so I will send a specific sports email as soon as I have more detail, including signing up on RegisterMyAthlete.

Basic Supplies – Your student will not need a lot of supplies for either online-only or the hybrid model.  Items that the student will likely eventually use this year include:

1 ½ to 2 inch three-ring binders

1 inch clear pocket science binder

Spiral notebooks, up to 4

Pencil pouch, including #2 pencils, black or blue pens, erasers

A plastic, wood or metal ruler

If you buy a calculator, make it a scientific one that performs statistical operations

A personal set of headphones or earbuds, to eliminate the need to share

A backpack to carry school items in (hybrid model students)

Important Note– All students are expected to bring a clean mask and a non-squeezable water bottle each day.  We will be minimizing sharing of items more than ever in classrooms, and will be disinfecting things that are shared between uses.  We have supplies available to give out if your child has need of anything. Please just let us know.

And finally - There is always a bit of anxiousness and anticipation as each new school year approaches.  After 32 years in the business of education, I still feel a bit nervous and excited this time of year.  Please feel free to share with your children that they are not alone if they are feeling this way!  The challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic pose are real and create opportunities for extra anxiousness. I am very fortunate to work with a group of people who care deeply about the children, families and community of Moscow.  We are committed to creating the best, safest school experience that we can.  As always, please contact us if you have questions and stay tuned for more detailed information. I look forward to working with you all this year.

Sincerely,

Bill Holman
